9. White Guy Survives End Of Watch
The Moment: After a huge gun fight that saw both Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena shot from close range by Mexican gangsters, the scene fades to black and opens on a funeral scene where we see that, out of the two men who were shot, the white American guy is alive, not the Hispanic one.
The Stupidity: Its an ongoing expectation in Hollywood movies that if a character has to die, it shouldnt be the white American one. Hence the clichés The black guy always dies first and The most attractive one always survives. Now Im not going to comment on who I think is more attractive, Im just going to comment on how stupid it is that the film ended in this clichéd manner when, lets face it, in the context of the scene both of the characters should have been killed. However, just like the last 30 minutes of Pearl Harbour and countless other mainstream films produced in America, Americans are infallible. One living is a stupid enough stretch of the imagination but the fact that it had to be the white guy is just another kick to our faces. Perhaps we're just stupid for not having expected it.
