10 Most Messed Up Horror Movie Monsters
1. Xenomorph - Alien (1979)
Topping the list is the Xenomorph from Alien. There are four stages to its life cycle, and each of its four forms conflate and distort both male and female sexual imagery and, in the words of the BBFC examination board, “pervert the process of reproduction”. Lovely.
We begin with the egg. It has what can only be described as a bi-labial opening (apologies). The egg is a female image of reproduction, but the way it breeds with Kane (John Hurt) is a violently male act of, well, face rape (apologies again), perpetrated by….
The facehugger. Perhaps the creepiest looking creature in the Alien franchise. It’s arachnid design is disturbingly vaginal but with a phallic proboscis that it uses to lay its egg inside Kane.
Then the chestburster. The maternal act of birth is here turned into a violent death. And the alien itself looks exactly like a phallus as it erupts from Kane’s torso.
And finally the adult xenomorph. H. R. Giger’s incredible, iconic design that just screams “killer”. Of course, the xenomorph is comprised of phallic imagery - its elongated head and its protruding second set of jaws which it thrusts into its victims.
More than just a scary alien, the underlying sexual horror of the xenomorph taps into our most vulnerable fears, making it the most messed up horror movie monster.
