10 Most Messed Up Horror Movie Monsters

8. The Babadook - The Babadook (2014)

When trying to decide whether the Babadook or Freddy Krueger should make the list, I went with the Babadook, and here’s why.

What makes the Babadook so particularly messed up is what he symbolises. Amelia (Essie Davis) is a widow struggling to cope with her difficult son (Noah Wiseman). As Amelia’s exhaustion worsens, the Babadook begins to appear in the family home. It is seemingly fluid in its shape, a pervasive presence of blackness throughout the house where a father once was.

The Babadook is something more disturbing than some ghoul butchering random victims. It is the manifestation of a widow’s grief; of a mother’s mental unravelling, culminating in violence thoughts against her child.

The Babadook is ultimately not able to be destroyed, but it can be tempered and lived with.
