The Film

In Darren Aronofsky’s perplexing debut feature, gifted yet neurotic mathematician Max is driven insane in his quest to find the meaning behind a mysterious 216-digit number his computer spits out while scouring the stock exchange for numerical patterns.

As Max’s grip on reality weakens he’s pursued by Wall Street agents and Hasidic Jews who both want to use his knowledge to their own ends and plagued by debilitating cluster headaches and hallucinations in this psychological thriller-horror that examines the fine line between genius and madness.

And if that doesn’t sound quite horrifying enough, wait until the penultimate scene in which a truly mad Max performs a DIY lobotomy with a power drill.

What The Hell It Means

Some have proffered that the movie’s corporate Wall Street whores and Hasidic characters represent the collision between capitalism and religion, others that Max represents the idea that knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Armchair analysis aside, Pi could be nothing more than just a pretty pretentious and avant garde look at one man’s descent into madness – like A Beautiful Mind for weird, arty types.
