The Film

What do you get when you put an architect, a police officer, a maths genius, a doctor, an autistic savant and a prison escape artist in an endless maze of rooms equipped with deadly booby traps ready to kill them at a moment’s notice with only a vague theory about prime numbers to guide them out?

Why, Vincenzo Natali’s 1997 cult classic Cube of course in which a group of strangers find themselves trapped in the eponymous cube with no idea of how they got there, why they’re there or how on earth they get the hell out.

What The Hell It Means

Who the hell knows?

Though a sequel and prequel have since been released that offer a little more explanation as to the origin and purpose of the cube, Natali wasn’t involved in either film so we’re not taking their exposition as gospel.

Both the characters in the original Cube and fans of the cult classic offer many theories – a government experiment? An alien invention? A genius madman’s sick human lab rat game? A metaphor for life itself? But by the end of the film rolls round, we’re as much in the dark as Cube’s (by this point mostly dead) characters.
