2. The Song - The Killing Of A Sacred Deer
The Killing Of A Sacred Deer follows surgeon Steven as he befriends a teenager called Martin. Even though Steven thinks Martin is disturbed, he feels guilty that he failed to save the boy's father, and so agrees to spend time with him. But as Martin's infatuation with Steven becomes obsessive, he suspects his family may be in grave danger.
As can be seen in Yorgos Lanthimos' other films like The Lobster and The Favorite, the Greek filmmaker likes to have his characters act and speak in an unnatural, almost dream-like manner. Even though most of the scenes in this film are intentionally surreal, there's one part that doesn't sit right with the rest of the story.
After Martin befriends Steven's daughter, Kim, she takes him to the park and sings Ellie Goulding's Burn. Even though Kim is off-key, she keeps singing, proving she trusts Martin and doesn't mind being vulnerable in front of him.
However, the scene goes on for so long, it comes across as awkward and cringey. If this song was a few seconds long, we would understand what it was trying to convey. But by badly singing for two-minutes straight, the scene feels unjustly comical.
