10 Most Outrageous Oscar Snubs

2. Forrest Gump (Best Picture)

To put it mildly, Forrest Gump is a divisive film. To some, it is frothy harmless fun, with a heartwarming performance from Tom Hanks. To others (including this writer, maybe), it is a turgid lump, unbearably saccharin, and bogged down by famous actor Tom Hanks doing an impression of a person with special needs. Whichever side of the fence you sit on, however, if you look at the films it triumphed over, it truly beggars belief.

Four Weddings And A Funeral; Pulp Fiction; Quiz Show; The Shawshank Redemption. These films all lost out to Zemeckis' Gump. Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway was released that year; for the Francophile, there was Three Colours: Red. And yet somehow, a Tom Hanks-lead Zelig ripoff joined the ranks of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Godfather 2.

And as if that wasn't enough, it also won, like, loads of other awards. Hanks, on a hot stream (following a deserved win for Philadelphia the previous year) claimed back to back Oscars. Robert Zemeckis took home Tarantino's directing award. Even Gary Sinise got a nomination. Gary Sinise!

For those who love the film, of course, there will be much to disagree with here. But no matter how big a Gump fan you somehow are, it's hard to avoid the obvious – Forrest Gump is Oscar bait through and through, practically designed to win contests like this.
