7. The BFG

Deadpool Reynolds
Disney

The big budget, part live-action, part CGI animated take on Roald Dahl’s children’s novel of the same name, The BFG tells the tale of young orphan child Sophie who is whisked away to Giant Country by the titular Big Friendly Giant where they come up against a group of not-so-friendly, kid-eating giants. Admittedly Mark Rylance’s performance in the movie as the BFG, although often veering into uncanny valley territory, is great but the film overall suffers in not capturing the true heart of its source material.

Roald Dahl was famous for the mischievous, dark humour that ran through many of his works, but here that’s swapped up for a more syrupy sentimentality that betrays the writer’s bent for black comedy. That’s probably not surprising given that the movie is in both the hands of director Steven Spielberg and Disney, two forces both known for their mawkish sentiment, but in a Roald Dahl adaptation that formula just doesn’t work.
