8. Zootopia

Disney

Disney’s Zootopia has been hailed as everything from a kid-friendly message about social justice to a political allegory for the crack epidemic that took hold in 1980s America, and its billion-dollar box office success and rave reviews are definite proof of its all-consuming popularity. But let’s take a look at its plot for a moment. Set in the titular city of Zootopia, the movie focuses on newly recruited rabbit police officer Judy and con artist fox Nick as they uncover a mystery behind the disappearance of the city’s predator residents that links in with a thinly veiled message about inclusion and not judging books by their cover.

It’s got all the typical ingredients of a Disney movie. Anthropomorphic animals? Check. A plucky heroine and unlikely sidekick? Check. Moral lessons and a harmonious ending? Again, check. Basically, it’s a predictable, cookie cutter Disney movie that never strays to far from the proven Disney formula for success and why it should get such praise for this is baffling. It’s hard not to suspect that Disney kind of gets a free pass to success because naturally kids will bug their begrudging parents to go see the film, which makes for more ticket sales but not necessarily tickets sold to people who are as invested in seeing the film as Disney’s young target audience is. And until it’s socially acceptable to dump your kids at the cinema and bugger off to the pub until the predictable twee-fest is over, it’s probably a trend that will continue and see more and more run of the mill Disney films lauded as brilliant.
