Some overrated movies seem to get a free pass just because of the equally hyped actors they star. Need proof? Look no further than British director Stephen Frears’ biographical dramedy Florence Foster Jenkins, starring three million-time Academy Award nominated critics’ darling Meryl Streep.

Who is Florence Foster Jenkins, I hear you ask? She was a turn-of-the-century New York heiress who had designs on an opera singing career, but unfortunately had all the vocal talent of a rejected first-round X Factor contestant. Despite being dubbed the world’s worst opera singer, she managed to carve something resembling a career thanks to being wealthy enough to stage her own shows and shield herself from negative criticism and even played a concert at the legendary Carnegie Hall.

Naturally, with Streep taking the title role the film was lavished with praise and hailed as the feel-good movie of the year. To be blunt, though, the movie isn’t quite sure whether it’s a tragedy or a farce and often feels quite mean like it’s poking fun at Florence rather than celebrating her unlikely rise to fame. But of course, Streep is in it so it must be amazing. Seriously, she could star in a big screen take on Two Girls, One Cup and would still get an Oscar nomination.

For a more thoughtful, touching take on Florence Foster Jenkins, check out Xavier Giannoli’s Marguerite. Loosely inspired by her life, it’s a much more sympathetic take on the infamous opera star.
