10 Most Overlooked Films Of This Decade
9. High-Rise (2015)
The work of J. G. Ballard has proven challenging to adapt for cinema in the past, but director Ben Wheatley's vision and Tom Hiddleston's energetic performance ensured High-Rise stands tall as one of the more memorable attempts.
The movie whisked the audience away to a dystopian version of the 1970s where the rich are holed up in luxury tower blocks, segregated from the rest of society. Hiddleston's Dr. Robert Laing is a resident at one of said towers who becomes embroiled in chaos when its infrastructure fails.
High-Rise packs an almighty satirical punch when dealing with socioeconomic themes. Although it's set in the 1970s, the messages it conveys have never been more relevant. It's just a shame not enough people got to hear them.
The film veers between moments of dark comedy and all-out brutality, channelling a range of emotions in the viewer, which is no less than what you'd expect from Ballard.
