10 Most Overrated '80s Horror Movies

9. Sleepaway Camp

Children Of The Corn
United Film Distribution

Sleepaway Camp vanished into obscurity shortly after its release but has developed a cult following in recent years. The story focuses on a teenage girl called Angela who's been left traumatised after a boating accident killed her sibling. After she tries to make friends at summer camp, the campers discover a killer is picking them off one-by-one.

Considering Sleepaway Camp is a whodunnit revolving around a serial killer in a camp full of horny teenagers, there's no question this B-movie was riding the coattails of slashers like Friday the 13th. Nevertheless, it became a hit, mainly because of its mind-blowing twist.

Clearly the ending is unexpected and the final frame is genuinely unsettling, but that shouldn't give the rest of the movie a free pass. Up until the conclusion, Sleepaway Camp is pretty good at putting the viewers to sleep. The script and kills are so lousy, it's hard to remember anything apart from the climax. Also, Desiree Gould, who portrays Aunt Martha, overacts to such a degree, every word she utters is unbearable to listen to.
