From Beyond is a sci-fi movie based on a HP Lovecraft short story of the same name. In the film, scientists build a Resonator which can stimulate a person's pineal gland, allowing them to detect non-corporeal lifeforms beyond our reality. But not only does the machine mutate the participants and drive them crazy, the lifeforms that it detects begin to attack them.

Thanks to the elaborate practical effects and otherworldly atmosphere, From Beyond comes closer to capturing Lovecraft's philosophy and cosmiscism more than any other film adaptation of his work.

But, as a movie... it's just okay.

If you look back on From Beyond, you'll instantly remember the phenomenally creative transformation and mutation sequences. But if you dig deeper, you remember... not much else. Apart from Ken Foree (who played the lead in Dawn of the Dead), a lot of the acting is cringeworthy. Jeffrey Combs, who was incredible in another Lovecraft adaptation, Re-Animator, is all over the place with his performance here. The stop-motion effects are poor and the BDSM scenes are so jarring, they feel like they were forced into the movie by the producer to get more butts in seats.
