10 Most Overrated Directors Working Today

4. Kevin Smith

Maybe I don't get Kevin Smith or something (and that's perfectly possible), but I've never found any of his "comedy" movies particularly funny. In fact, they feel a whole lot like they're trying way too hard and the results are kind of distracting. As a human person, I find Smith entertaining and amusing (from what I've seen in interviews and such), though his movies are always static, uninspired, pretentious or just plain annoying. Smith's best movie, I think, actually resulted from the one time he moved away from trying to be funny and made an indie horror: Red State. Not perfect and flawed in a lot of ways, the movie was far more interesting (and ambitious) than watching his characters sitting around talking about pop culture, albeit in a way that doesn't strike me as being particularly amusing. Believe me: I like hangout movies. I like listening to characters just talking. I don't mind movies that don't really go anywhere. I'm just slightly bemused that people like the world that Kevin Smith's characters inhabit.
