4. Spy
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93% It's safe to say that most people assumed Spy would be terrible. Melissa McCarthy hasn't had the best luck with her film ventures post-Bridesmaids, after all; Identity Thief was plainly insufferable, whilst The Heat was okay but nothing special. The fact that Spy emerged as a relatively funny film - one actually worth the price of a ticket - came as something of a shock to the general population, because who, really, expected this to achieve such acclaim? Whilst Spy is a pretty good comedy, though, it's not quite the endlessly brilliant film that a 93% Rotten Tomatoes might have you believe (nor is it one of the best films of the year). There's definitely a sense that the critics went easy on Spy, because - whilst there are some inspired gags and it's nice that Melissa McCarthy finally ended up with a vehicle worthy of her talents - there's a lingering "been there, done that" feeling hanging over the picture. The plot is also chaotic and there are too many characters - things can get really exhausting. Spy movies have been spoofed countless times, and though this movie is watchable for the length of its runtime, it's also not particularly memorable. Surely a great film is one that you can revisit time and time again? Quite frankly, Spy really isn't a film you'd watch twice.
