10 Most Overrated Performances In MCU History (So Far)
5. Elizabeth Olsen – Wanda Maximoff
Wanda Maximoff, or Scarlet Witch to use her "made-up name", was a much anticipated addition to one of the Marvel Comics universes, pre-2014. Many long-time fans were hoping to see her appear in Fox's X-Men canon, as the daughter of Ian McKellen's Magneto.
Instead, she arrived in 2014's Avengers: Age Of Ultron, utterly unconnected to the mutants as we know them, in the form of Elizabeth Olsen (Mary-Kate and Ashley's li'l sis). To our delight, Wanda had brother Pietro/Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in tow; to our dismay, she was as wooden as a petrified Groot.
While Olsen's performances in the role have improved with each entry, her progress is not as stark as many critics and fans would have us believe. In recent films, where she has been paired with Paul Bettany's synthetic lifeform Vision, it has often been hard to tell which one is the android. Thankfully, she has phased out the awful, faux-Eastern European accent supposedly native to the people of Sokovia, adopting a more common-sense North American one that doesn't require any linguistic gymnastics.
Wanda is not without her share of heartbreak, tragedy and critical moments – her actions kick off the events of Civil War that ultimately see the near-permanent disassembling of the Avengers. But during each of her key moments, there has been some significant oomph lacking in the performance.
That won't stop us holding high hopes for her future though, and we wait with baited breath for her appearance in the next Dr Strange.
