10 Most Overrated Performances In MCU History (So Far)
6. Jamie Foxx – Max Dillon
As everyone who's anyone should know by now, Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together three different iterations of the web-slinger and villains from across their series for a big ol' fracas around NYC.
While everyone loved the sizable volume of old-school cast members the studio crammed the latest Spidey flick full of, there seemed to be a significant lack of direction – not just in the action, but in the acting. For heavyweights like Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe, it was just another day at the office, and they were able to slide back into their roles no problem, but for others it wasn't so simple.
The result? Jamie Foxx. A lot of Jamie Foxx. Just SO MUCH Jamie Foxx.
Many fans have been blinded by the sheer nostalgia of it all, but as Max Dillon/Electro, Foxx chews scenery like bubble-gum, start to finish. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had the benefit of the character going through a big transition – from shunned computer geek to Blue Man Group auditionee – but with No Way Home, Foxx was charging full tilt from the off.
Yes, Foxx has put in outstanding performances in some outstanding films, but it takes magic on both sides of the camera to make this happen, and director Jon Watts forgot to check the rapper-cum-actor's ego at the door. While a notoriously firm directorial authority like Quentin Tarantino can reign in the bluster, showboating and two-tonne personality that Foxx brings with him, unfortunately Watts was simply not up to the task.
