10 Most Overused Lines In Movie History

3. "Hello? Hello!?"

001

Here's a line that's not just overused, it's downright idiotic. Watch just about any movie that involves a phone call, and if one person hangs up unexpectedly, the other person will almost definitely say, "Hello? Hello!?". It's dumb because it completely ignores the fact that someone hanging up would leave a dead dial tone, making it clear that they've hung up; it's a lazy way of emphasising the fact that the person who hung up is angry/assertive/whatever, while the character talking to an inanimate object looks like an absolute moron. It's just not something that should be needed to convey the scene; a click and a dead dial tone is enough, though curiously very few sound editors in the business actually even bother to include this. It's immensely frustrating and something that even good films do; every time I hear it, my respect for a movie instantly goes out the window.
