3. Sauron's Face

Ian Holm Bilbo
New Line Cinema

Sauron may be the big bad of The Lord of the Rings but he never shows up in the original novel. But when the film adaptation was announced, Tolkien fans were wondering if the titular character would make an appearance and square off against Aragorn and his allies. After all, you can't have a cinematic showdown without the main villain, right?

Sadly, Sauron never faces off against the fellowship in the trilogy.

But he was supposed to. A scene was filmed for the final battle of Sauron descending as a brilliant ball of light to lead his forces against Aragorn's army. As he arrives on the battlefield, the Dark Lord can be seen without his helmet. For a split-second, he takes the form of the angelic being, Annatar; the identity he used to fool the Elves into helping him forge the One Ring.

Peter Jackson ultimately discarded this confrontation and so, used CGI to replace him with an armoured troll. This scene may not have made it into the finished movie but it is the closest we've gotten to seeing the face of Sauron.
