By the time 2019’s Godzilla: King Of The Monsters came along, the MonsterVerse was in full swing, with the filmmakers keen to include as many classic Kaiju as possible from the Toho films. But while they were able bring in King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan for the sequel, budget constraints prevented them from acquiring the rights to more monsters.

That didn’t stop writer/director Michael Dougherty from teasing the presence of one of the most famous Godzilla adversaries, Anguirus. First appearing in 1955’s Godzilla Raids Again, Anguirus holds a special place in the hearts of long-time fans of the franchise, as he was the very first monster to fight Godzilla on the big screen. It’s no wonder then that Dougherty was keen to feature him in King Of The Monsters, even just for a second.

In the scene where Godzilla is resurrected by a nuclear bomb in the underwater city, we cut to a wide shot of the explosion, where, if paused at the right moment, you can make out the remains of a massive dinosaur creature that largely resembles Anguirus. You may be required to turn up the brightness of your TV and grab a magnifying glass to see it, but it is definitely there on the left-hand side of the frame.

With this likely to be the only time we’ll see him in the Monsterverse, it’s no wonder fans have paused and analysed this moment to death.
