8. Spiral (1998)
This film follows on from the events of Ring, the film that gave us one of the most infamous horror movie curses of all time. We all know the story of the cursed tape which kills you in seven days once you watch it, but in Spiral the curse is revealed to be more powerful than ever.
In the film, pathologist Andō tries to find out more about the curse that led to the death of his acquaintance Ryūji Takayama and his family. Teaming up with a former student of Takayama’s (Mai Takano), he delves into the background that led to their deaths - along the way discovering the diary of Takayama’s late wife.
It is here that we find out the curse has diversified itself, branching out from killing only those who watch the videotape and moving on to those who read the diary. Through a series of twists, we see that Sadako Yamamura has become more powerful than ever, eventually being reborn through Takano’s death.
If you thought that a cursed videotape was bad enough, Yamamura reaching out into the multimedia sphere really is the last thing we saw coming!
