R2-D2 is, you could argue, the real hero of the entire saga. One of the few characters to appear in all seven episodes, the story is essentially told from the point of view of him and his compatriot C-3PO, although it's the astromech who plays a major role. With a daring sense of adventure, a spunky attitude, and above all true courage, Artoo is responsible for saving all of the major players in Star Wars at least once. He flies in the spaceships of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, coming to their rescue on a variety of occasions, stops the trash compactor in A New Hope, fixes the shield generator that allows Padme's ship to escape in The Phantom Menace, and many more exploits besides. He combines great bravery with a number of gadgets to become one of the most important figures in the Rebellion and is just one example on this list that you don't have to be big to be great and powerful.
