10 Most Precocious Kids In Movies

4. Sam Shakusky & Suzy Bishop (Moonrise Kingdom)

moonrise-kingdom In joint fourth place come pre-teen tearways Sam and Suzy, the star-crossed lovers of Wes Anderson's ninth feature. He (Jared Gilman) is a Khaki Scout turned rogue, running away from camp to rendezvous with his pen pal. His correspondent (Kara Hayward), is rarely seen without carrying a pair of binoculars, a portable record player or even a kitten- and has more than a hint of the Nouvelle Vague about her. She's also the reason that her mother is reading 'Coping With The Very Troubled Child'... With his oversized glasses and corncob pipe, Sam is an endearing comedy character. Suzy, meanwhile, buries herself in a book to stave off her melancholia. And whether it's the neurosis typical of all Precocious Kids in Movies, or their mere presence in an Anderson film, but the weight of the world is truly pressing down on these shoulders. In their idyllic hideaway, a secluded cove that bears the film's title, they entertain hopelessly grown-up thoughts while their parents back at home squabble like children. At times, he runs the risk of becoming another Oliver Tate (for example, telling Suzy ''I love you but you have no idea what you're talking about'') but at the very least Sam can now add fishing, foraging and a spot of fumbling to his badges.
