Rewind to the 1990s and the movie landscape was a different place than it is today.

DVDs were exploding into the mainstream to declare war on grainy visuals and the rewind button, Blockbuster video stores were still a thing and Netflix wasn't.

This transformative era played host to more than its fair share of cinematic hits, from Oscar-winning masterpieces to must-see blockbusters which set new standards for box office takings and visual effects.

Then there are those vintage cult classics we simply couldn't get enough of. The irresistibly quotable and eternally rewatchable movies that captured the decade's zeitgeist and preserved it in celluloid forever.

So here are 10 movies from the '90s which have stood the test of time and hold up to a level of repeat viewing that Phil Conners might find hauntingly familiar.

10. Groundhog Day (1993)

It's debatable whether Groundhog Day is Bill Murray's greatest movie, but it's certainly one of his most rewatchable.

Only an actor of his rare talent could pull off a concept this bizarre - a cynical man with a permanent hangdog expression is caught up in a timeloop for no apparent reason.

The results vary from hilarious to dark as Murray's Phil Connors uses his plight for his own selfish gains before repeatedly attempting suicide in a futile attempt to escape.

But by the end of the film, we are reminded how much difference a day can make if you seize it, and that's a take-home lesson that rings true every time.

Plus these immortal words from the great Mr Connors are never unfunny, no matter how many times you hear them...

"I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster and drank pina coladas. At sunset we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn’t I get that day over and over and over?"
