5. Demon Elevator - De Lift (1983)

For a lot of people, elevators conjure up feelings of claustrophobia and unease - so much so, that affected folk are likely inclined to take the stairs if the option is available to them. Which means that, yes, whilst there's some actual real-world fear associated to the idea of using an elevator, we're not sure it ever justified The Lift getting made (or remade, in fact, which it did in 2002 as The Shaft, and starred Naomi Watts). First of all - as with most of the movies on this list - you've got to get your head around an otherwise sentient object become conscious and deciding to get even with all those people who took lift-usage for granted. Which is what happens here, of course, though "the Lift" in question has mustered up a relatively impressive selection of ways in which to torture its victims, one of which involves cutting off the oxygen supply and suffocating them to death. At least the surviving characters opt to take the stairs at the end of the movie, though we seriously hope that De Stairs isn't worming its way into production somewhere abroad. "Okay, so, these stairs are, like, possessed by a demon, okay? And then there's this - "
