1. Vertigo - Best Picture
To be fair, Vertigo is a film that was snubbed in most major categories (it also missed out on a Best Actor nod for James Stewart and a Best Director nod for Alfred Hitchcock), but it missing out on a Best Picture nomination is easily the most dispiriting of them all. The film ended up only being nominated in two technical categories, though was recently bestowed with the honour of knocking Citizen Kane from its long-held perch as the greatest film of all time in Sight and Sound's prestigious poll. Hitchcock's film is a visceral, cerebral masterpiece of filmmaking, stripping away Stewart's warm, likeable persona to make him something far more insidious, erratic and fearful; the result is a challenging, supremely intelligent film that also happens to be extremely entertaining. really better than Vertigo? Not a chance. Which ridiculous Oscar snubs annoy you the most? Let us know in the comments below.
