9. A Child Ballerina Vampire - Abigail
Weird kids have always had a home in horror, but the title character of 2024’s Abigail has more layers to her character than most.
Abigail, played by Alisha Weir, is the focus of a kidnap plot by a group of criminals, who plan to extort her mob boss father for a hefty sum to ensure her safe return. As it transpires, she doesn’t need any protection, as she’s more than capable of looking after herself.
Much to the dismay of her captors, Abigail reveals herself to be a centuries-old vampire with a bloodlust as strong as ever. Now, this adorable little girl decked out in ballet gear is the most terrifying thing anybody has ever seen.
There was a real possibility that this over-the-top concept might have been too much for this movie, but Abigail is a genuinely frightening force. Weir plays the character with a masterful display of authority, embodying a persona far more mature than her actual age, which is exactly what this part needed.
Sometimes, a silly idea on paper can work in the real world. Weir’s is a career that shall be watched with great interest going forward.
