8. A Sloth - Slotherhouse
Lions. Tigers. Bears. Sharks. Swarms of killer bees. If you’re going to go down the animal horror route, then there are plenty of options to choose from, so why on Earth would you ever pick a creature famous for being slow?
This is a question for the makers of 2023’s Slotherhouse, which has to be in contention for the most tortured pun in a film title of all time. Emily is a college student and member of the Sigma Lambda Theta (SLTH) sorority. In her campaign to become president of the chapter, Emily adopts a three-toed sloth in order to gain votes, but, in a turn of events no one saw coming, the creature goes on a killing spree.
The maddest thing about this whole project is not the fact that a sloth is the villain or that it’s got Colossus from Deadpool in it - it’s that Slotherhouse actually works.
Perhaps because the concept is so off-the-wall, the movie is incredibly enjoyable. It’s a great mix of humour and genuinely bloody moments and it’s already amassed a strong cult following, which should come as no surprise considering how popular sloths are on the Internet.
