10 Most Ridiculously Unearned Movie Twists Of All Time
2. Earth Gets Invaded - Planet Of The Apes
This is written with trepidation, given the protective nature of this franchise’s avid fanbase, but that infamous twist at the end of Planet Of The Apes wasn’t exactly a semiotic-driven work of art. Let’s face it, Chuck Heston’s George Taylor was an astronaut, with a decent knowledge of Earth and the universe, so, he perhaps should have been aware that the planet he was monkeying about on was in fact a version of Earth. But it’s pretty damn iconic, so we’ll let that one go.
What is slightly more unforgivable lies at the door of Tim Burton who, along with turning the phrase ‘reimagining’ into a thing, created one of the worst remakes (sorry, reimagines) of all time, complete with a dire twist to top it off. The film looked good, but that was about all it had going for it - then there is the ending, the horror of it all.
This time, instead of the old Earth switcheroo, Burton reimagined (last time, we promise) an ending where Mark Wahlberg tumbles back to earth, takes an impromptu tour of the Lincoln Memorial, only to find those damn dirty apes had taken over the planet. The real twist would have been no twist at all, a trait that has made the recent reboots so successful.
