10 Most Selfish Characters In Horror Movie History
3. Christian - Midsommar
Now, I know that Ari Aster didn't intend for the ending of Midsommar to gain such a positive visceral reaction for his audience, but maybe he shouldn't have gone as hard as he did when creating Christian.
To put it lightly, Christian is a narcissistic, gas-lighting, coasting-through-life toxic boyfriend. Yes, that was lightly. Unfortunately, for most of the demographic audience of Midsommar, Christian is a character that hits home. Too many people have had to go through the mind-game mine-field that is a relationship with that kind of person.
At the start of the movie, we meet Christian at his worst, he's stuck in a relationship that he doesn't want to be in, but he doesn't have the motivation or the nerve to end it. And he only gets worse from there.
In what can only be called the "highlights" of Christian's douchebaggery we have: neglecting to tell his girlfriend he is leaving the country for a month, gaslighting her at every opportunity, stealing his friend's thesis topic, forgetting his girlfriend's birthday and cheating on said girlfriend.
Christian's selfishness comes from a place of laziness and apathy, and in some ways that's much worse than just being straight-up heartless (although arguments can be made for him being that too).
