8. Maj. Grant - Die Hard 2

Once again our tank top-clad hero, John McClane, finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time €“ except now instead of being trapped in a skyscraper with German terrorists, he's in an airport with ... German terrorists. Just as it seems that McClane's highly coincidental predicament couldn't get any worse, it transpires that his wife is trapped aboard one of the planes circling above the airport; a plane with limited fuel that isn't being allowed to land. It's handy then, that Maj. Grant and his Special Forces cohorts are en-route to sort this whole terrorism palaver out.

McClane and Grant really seem to hit it off at first, the two help each other out multiple times over the film's duration and seem to hold a mutual admiration for one another. However, when McClane isn't present, we see Maj. Grant and his men joking around with a new recruit before suddenly slitting his throat, revealing that the Major and his loyal crew are in fact aligned with the terrorists. It's not often that John manages to make friends with a figure of authority, which is why it's particularly disheartening when one of those allies turns out to be a greedy opportunist with a penchant for betrayal.
