Helmed by prolific and acclaimed filmmaker Takashi Miike, Audition is a film that’s revered for its artistic brilliance and credited as one of the films that brought J-horror to the forefront of western culture. The film is also infamous for its agonising violence and grotesque imagery.

After the death of his wife, Shigeharu (Ryo Ishibashi) is persuaded to hold fake auditions to find a new spouse. It’s here he meets the quiet-spoken Asami (Eihi Shiina), and the pair strike-up an intimate relationship. However, after going on a weekend getaway, Asami mysteriously vanishes leaving Shigeharu to track her down.

Throughout his search, however, he begins to learn unsettling truths about who Asami really is. Notably, he learns she may be connected to a grisly murder in which an extra tongue and fingers were found at the scene. This causes Shigeharu to picture a nightmarish scenario in which Asami keeps a mutilated man in a bag and feeds him a bowl of vomit.

As Shigeharu thinks about the information he heard, two jump cuts cut to a pulsating severed tongue then to the man’s wailing mouth. Though the scene is already stomach-churningly grotesque, this slice of added surrealism heightens our feelings of displeasure tenfold.
