Django Unchained, non-surprisingly, had its fair share of controversies. A film about the American slave trade, where a free slave-come-bounty-hunter takes on a plantation in order to find and free his wife. Django was always going to have its fair share of uncomfortable viewing and shocking moments. None more though than the dog scene where Leonardo DiCaprios sadistic portrayal of a southern American plantation owner, Monsieur Calvin J. Candie, showcases his cruelty. As a test for Django he unleashes a pair of vicious dogs on a runaway slave. The scene is built so nothing is visually gratuitous, but instead focuses on DiCaprio and Foxx sizing each other up as we hear the slave being torn apart, knowing Django is unable to do anything but maintain his composure. Its made all the more gut wrenching by the bloodthirsty and riled pack of white yokels who revel in the sedition, contrasted by a group of helpless slaves who can do nothing but watch. The scene leaves much to the imagination, heightening its impact and setting the tone for whats to come and leaves you with a heavy nauseous feeling.
