There's a strong case to be made that any of the three entries within Christopher Nolan's paradigm-shifting Batman mythos - two of which were cited for their cinematography with Oscar nominations - could make the cut here, ahead of plenty of rivals, let alone the other two. The rules therefore have been duly bent, with Wally Pfister's excellent work considered part of a single whole by our reckoning.

And why shouldn't it be? Few film series full-stop, let alone within the comic-book genre, have shown such rich visual unity across their length and breadth. Pfister, translates Nolan's overarching vision of a superhero blockbuster as a weighty, political crime drama with aplomb; it's in the way he turns the towering, monolithic structures of Gotham City into a shimmering steel minefield of allegory that stick in the mind alongside its masterful raft of performances.
