9. Jorg Buttgereit
Teutonic master of death based mayhem, Jorg Buttgereit introduced to the world self proclaimed 'Corpse F**king Art' via NEKRomantik and NEKRomantik 2: Return Of The Loving Dead. These outrageous pieces of shameless filth feature a menage á trois with a rotten corpse as a showcase in the first film, and a group of necros getting off to a film of seals being clubbed to death in the second film. Schramm is Buttgereit's über-violent film about a serial killer. It gets into the killer's head and firmly stays there as the viewers are treated to a very gory, psychosexual freak show that is as compelling as it is horrible to watch. In Der Todesking, Buttgereit played around with themes of suicide. Half gutter, half arthouse, it is a film that defies categorisation and should be actively avoided by sensitive souls. Buttgereit is a pioneering director. Of course NEKRomantik sounds like it is totally tasteless and on one level it is, but on another level it is beautifully filmed and the score is very effective. Buttgereit makes visually arresting movies which just happen to be utterly outrageous and tasteless, but he does it in damn fine style.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
