Thai horror-comedy 13 Beloved (aka 13: Game Of Death) saw a down-on-his-luck everyman encounter the chance of his lifetime when they’re chosen to complete a series of challenges in return for a large cash sum.

This is the same premise that was used in the 2014 remake 13 Sins, which starred Mark Webber as Elliot, a kindly man in serious financial difficulty. All his problems seem to be solved, however, when he’s contacted by a stranger who promises him substantial amounts of money if he’s able to accomplish thirteen challenges. But if he fails to finish a task or tells anybody what’s happening, he’ll forfeit everything he’s earned so far.

In both versions, the first task is to simply swat a fly. But from here each film ventures down its own slightly different road. Whereas the original takes a more cynical approach to its script, the remake doubles-down on the dark humour as Elliot’s own challenges become increasingly unsavoury.

Fronted by a solid performance from Webber, 13 Sins succeeds by transposing its premise into a specifically western context and asks just how far one’s morality is willing to go for financial gain in this ultimate game of dare.
