Japanese director Masayuki Ochiai's 2008 adaption of Shutter is a remake of the 2004 Thai film of the same name.

Aside from shifting the location from Bangkok to Tokyo, the plot remains the same as we follow newlyweds Ben (Joshua Jackson) and Jane (Rachael Taylor) move to Japan where Ben hopes to further his career as a photographer. After the couple accidentally run over a strange girl at night, however, they begin to experience supernatural happenings and must find a way to put an end to their nightmare. But what they discover is more shocking than they ever imagined.

Although this flick was derided upon release for the leads' lacklustre performances and overall lack in subtly, Shutter proved to be an engrossing ghost story.

Composed of mostly grays and overcast skies, this Tokyo generated a foreboding atmosphere that became a constant and uneasy presence throughout this retelling. Likewise, the filmmaker took great care in recreating many of the scares from the original - some almost shot for shot. He understood where the dread came from and incorporated it into his own vision.

It may be on the overdramatic side, but Shutter is nevertheless a chilling ghostly tale that stays faitful to its Thai roots.
