When a team of archaeologists excavate a site in Finland's Korvatunturi Mountains, they unwittingly release something a lot more sinister than they could've ever imagined. In the nearby village, youngster Pietari (Onni Tommila) begins to suspect that the fabled Krampus has been released and is the force responsible for the slaughter of the local reindeer and the vanishing of his friends.

His widowed father (Jorma Tommila) is reluctant to indulge his son’s fantasies. But when a naked old man is found in one of his wolf traps, he and the other adults eventually discover the truth about what’s going on in the mountains.

This is Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, a deliriously off-kilter feature debut from writer-director Jalmari Helander that takes traditional Finnish folklore and subverts it into a wry dark fantasy. Though the pacing is slow to start, events take a sharp turn for the worst when the villagers finally discover what's in the mountain.

Now a beloved cult yuletide essential, what Rare Exports lacks in conventional scares it more than makes up for with its personality.

A holiday horror like nothing else you've ever seen before, Rare Exports is exactly the kind of enjoyable horror romp to liven up your festive season.
