10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Curses
7. Devil Doll (1964) - The Cursed Doll
I’ll be the first to admit that at times this film does come across a little goofy, but given that it was made long before the cutting edge of practical and special effects were mainstream I’ll cut it some slack and focus on the idea behind the goofs.
In Devil Doll, thanks to the magical workings of the Great Vorelli, souls can be transferred into dummy vessels and made to spend eternity there as their human body dies. Using hypnotism and so called ‘Eastern magic’, Vorelli can condemn any poor soul he likes to a life of confinement.
Ventriloquist dummies are creepy enough without a curse, and anyone who claims otherwise is a psycho. Add the possibility of having to spend your life trapped inside the body of one of those awful wooden mini-men, and you’ve got the recipe for a great curse.
Powerless in all senses of the word, Vorelli’s previous assistant Hugo is stuck inside a doll’s body and caged when he is not used for performances. Not even the release of death is an option - how would one go about killing a wooden dummy, after all?
