10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Werewolves
9. The Wolfman
Joe Johnston’s 2010 Wolfman remake is not a classic, but it’s better than a lot of people will have you believe, and much if not all of this is down to Benicio Del Toro’s turn as the titular beast. A natural anti hero, Del Toro plays the tortured Lawrence Talbot, a nobleman afflicted with werewolfism by his own father.
Del Toro and his co-star Anthony Hopkins sell the experience brilliantly, with the lycanthropic curse a gory representation of the strained relationship between father and son. This is no Teen Wolf-style bonding exercise: Hopkins’ hidden horror is another example of the man’s utter lack of care for others. Naturally, the people of Victorian London can’t get on board with Talbot’s plight; he is locked in an asylum and experimented on, following which the doctors quickly learn the error of their ways.
The visuals are as good as we’ve seen in the subgenre, with American Werewolf’s Rick Baker returning to deal with the practical effects (which they admirably used as much as possible). It’s no classic, but it’s wolfy good fun.
