10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Werewolves
8. Ginger Snaps
Horror cinema’s multitude of monsters are often used for metaphorical purposes, and werewolves serve effectively - if unsubtly - in this 2000 cult classic about puberty. We all go through a lot of changes in our teens, and Ginger Snaps takes this to its logical extreme, with the titular Ginger a moody young woman whose adolescence is made all the more confusing by a bout of lycanthropy.
The wolves here are gnarled and nasty creatures, whose looks are achieved solely with physical effects on a very low budget. The transformation scenes are cleverly shot in half light, with minor details of bone bursting from flesh and sprouting hair. Much is left to the viewer’s imagination - while this is necessitated by the financial constraints, it works to the film’s benefit, making our rare glimpses of the beast all the more rewarding.
The werewolf curse is depicted as something of a release in Ginger Snaps, with the afflicted title character eventually giving in to the newfound power. A sequel and a prequel eventually followed, but neither had the level of humanity that led to the original becoming a minor horror classic.
