10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Werewolves
6. Wer
One of the grimier werewolf films in recent memory, Wer hinges on a neat concept: a defense attorney is brought onto a tricky murder case, with the suspect turning out to be a werewolf. Wer takes an original approach to the design of its monster, and reaps the rewards in an underrated low budget horror.
Brian O’Connor is well cast as the afflicted killer - he’s physically domineering and hirsute, and plays the role of a man with a deadly secret well. Wer foregoes the traditional werewolf costume and goes for something distinctly more human. In lieu of a traditional back and forth transformation, once the curse has taken hold, you’re pretty much gripped - it is depicted as an illness, which you can struggle against but will ultimately overwhelm you. These are non-standard monsters, but all the scarier for it, with the usual mythology replaced with incredible strength and sturdiness.
This is very much a modern horror, with the scares deriving mostly from jumps and bursts of violence, but it’s a fresh and original take on a tried and tested genre, which is always smart enough to play to its strengths.
