10 Most Terrifying Horror Movie Werewolves

4. When Animals Dream

Wer Movie
Alphaville Pictures

This 2014 Danish horror brilliantly blends relatable teenage drama with stiflingly creepy werewolf action. In a brilliant breakout role, Sonia Suhl plays Marie, a sixteen year old from a family full of secrets. Most pertinent of all: that she harbours the werewolf gene, which is something you really ought to be told.

When Animals Dream is a slow build, but ekes out a lot of scares before its bloodthirsty final act. Suhl is spectacular as the terrified teen, and she is responsible for conveying the horror of the changes that are overcoming her. She sells it perfectly in some utterly chilling scenes, most notably the visceral moment in which she chews on glass to provoke a reaction from her taciturn father.

The denouement - in which the werewolf carnage begins in earnest - almost comes as a relief, as Marie submits to her bestial form and exerts her revenge on the townsfolk who have done her wrong.

A classy addition to the werewolf genre, When Animals Dream is all about the build and the atmosphere. It creates a truly sinister world, then shocks you when you least expect it with its climax of carnage.
