10 Most Terrifying Horror Movies Released In 2023 So Far
8. Sick
2023 has, as horror often does, brought even more slasher flicks into the world. It's a year where killers have gone wild, with Scream VI giving Ghostface another run and even Winnie-The-Pooh having a go at taking out teenagers. However, this slasher manages to stand out thanks to its relevant concept.
Sick follows two friends who decide to isolate together in a secluded lake house due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while they think they're away from civilisation, it soon becomes clear that they're not alone, and their guest isn't there to make friends.
The film explores the dread of the pandemic through the depiction of isolation and the anxiety/paranoia of the virus itself. Without delving into spoilers, the virus plays a part in the film that feeds into the danger of the pandemic and the anger felt by the public. This is eerily unsettling as everyone can relate to the toil felt during this part of history.
It's also an incredibly effective slasher movie with great pacing and enough violence to satisfy viewers. It combines timely satire with a terrifying murder spree, which is exactly what it needed to do to work.
