Katharine Isabelle has had a few iconic horror roles: Ginger Fitzgerald in the excellent Ginger Snaps and its two sequels, Margot Verger in TV's Hannibal (and, if we're being generous, Gibb in Freddy Vs Jason). But no character she has portrayed has been quite so sinister as Mary Mason.
While much has been said of American Mary's portrayal of body modification subcultures, this is ultimately just a backdrop to a tragic tale of an ambitious young woman's corruption and descent into madness.
A surgeon in training with great promise but greater cash flow problems, Mary stumbles quite by chance into the body mod underworld. Here she finds not only ample financial reward, but the respect and recognition her peers in the medical profession have denied her; and when she is wronged in the worst way, she uses her newfound skills to exact harsh retribution.
A cult sensation since its first screenings in 2012, American Mary has long been one of the most widely-praised films in the women in horror movement, not least because it's the work of female writer-directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. The Canadian duo are reportedly set to shoot a remake of David Cronenberg's Rabid in early 2018.
