10 Most Underrated Female Horror Movie Monsters In History

1. Irena Dubrovna - Cat People

RKO

While the rest of the planet was a little preoccupied with the Second World War, American company RKO Pictures was carrying on with business as usual.

The year after they introduced the world to Citizen Kane, RKO put out another movie - a low-budget horror flick called Cat People. It failed to grab headlines at the time of its release, but, many years later, it’s now considered by some as something of a hidden gem.

Cat People is all about Irena Dubrovna, a Serbian woman living in America played by French actor Simone Simon. On the surface, she seems like an ordinary lady, but she harbours a dark secret. When she becomes aroused, she turns into a gigantic, bloodthirsty panther.

Her boyfriend still agrees to marry her, despite this reddest of red flags.

There’s a lot to discuss with Cat People, such as how society views female sexuality, but at the same time, a woman who could transform into a murderous animal is still really cool, even decades after the film’s release.

Though more people know about Irena these days, she still isn’t nearly as famous as she should be.
