10 Most Underrated Harry Potter Movie Scenes
1. Professor Slughorn Gives Harry The Memory – The Half-Blood Prince
The sixth Harry Potter movie doesn’t get enough credit. As the penultimate story, it tends to get overshadowed by the two-part finale. With the possible exception of Dumbledore’s death, the best parts of The Half-Blood Prince don’t get enough credit.
After taking a helpful dose of Felix Felicis (the lucky potion), Harry ventures into the grounds, bumps into Professor Slughorn, and the two of them support Hagrid by attending Aragog’s funeral. It’s an amusing series of events that concludes with a terrific scene inside Hagrid’s hut.
With a bit of Dutch courage, Slughorn starts talking about Harry’s mother and the gift she gave him when she was a student. Harry then encourages Slughorn to be brave like his mother and give up the memory he’s been hiding for so long.
Jim Broadbent and Daniel Radcliffe are fantastic here. They both nail the transition from humour to drama, transforming the amusing premise into a heartfelt exchange that’s a vital part of the plot. The music from Nicholas Hooper is also superb, adding even more emotion to this terrific – and underrated – scene.
