2. Professor Moody Performs The Unforgivable Curses – The Goblet Of Fire
Every year, Harry and his classmates experience a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and in The Goblet of Fire, Professor Moody makes an unforgettable first impression.
Using a spider as his test subject, Moody demonstrates the three Unforgivable Curses. To begin with, he amuses the class with the Imperius Curse, forcing the spider to jump around and land on their heads. But the comedic atmosphere soon vanishes when Moody tortures the spider using the Cruciatus Curse before putting it out of its misery with the Killing Curse.
In a couple of minutes, we get a firm understanding of who this man is. His aggressive approach to teaching is both frightening and compelling. He doesn’t apologise to those who are uncomfortable (like Neville) but insists that the students appreciate the dangers of the Dark Arts.
Of course, Moody actually turns out to be a Death Eater in disguise, so his fixation with the Dark Arts makes a lot of sense. Regardless of his true identity, Moody's opening class is the most memorable lesson in the franchise.
