Heimdall exists for two reasons; to watch over all the realms, and to serve the current King of Asgard. He may occasionally twist the rules for the good of Asgard as a whole, but for the most part, he is fully committed to his task.

So, finding Heimdall absent from his post in Thor: Ragnarok, is an early sign that things are going wrong. He quickly becomes one of the most important characters in the film, leading and protecting the refugees from Hela's Asgard.

He later joins Thor and the Revengers in one final fight for Asgard, before leading them all to escape on one of the Grandmaster's stolen ships, reassuring Thor that he has made the right choice.

Though Heimdall dies early in Infinity War, his contribution to the film is vital. He uses the last of his energy to send The Hulk to Earth and raise the alarm. Heimdall's actions were the only thing that kept Earth from being caught entirely off-guard by the arrival of Thanos.
