Michael Bay's name always brings negative press, and for good reason: he's the guy who brought the world four Transformers movies, each one more putrid than the last. Toxic and regressive, the worst crime committed by his shockingly bad franchise, perhaps, is that it's somehow occupied Bay's talent for such a long time.

That's right: "talent." Because bad as most Bay films are, it's hard to deny that the guy possesses a unique kind of artistry. When he's firing on all cylinders (with a dollop of self-awareness), he can produce a film as ludicrously entertaining as The Rock. His latest film, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, isn't of that variety, but it is - at least - a step in the right direction for the universally-loathed filmmaker.

Starring John Krasinski, 13 Hours centres on the true story of a group of security agents who defend a US compound against terrorists in Libya. It was panned by most critics, many of whom probably saw the "A Michael Bay Film" and made their minds up there and then. In actuality, this is an exciting film featuring some of the most spectacular action sequences of the director's career; if the acting is a little dodgy and it's a bit too long, Bay delivers a brilliant adrenaline rush to make up for it.

It's surprising that, based on the action alone, more critics didn't push audiences to see this film; for fans of the explosive genre, it stands as one of the year's best.
